9786139446322: Quarrying and livelihoods: A Case Study of Mpape Community in Nigeria

Inhaltsangabe

Mpape, a poorly planned suburb of the Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria lies side-by-side blasting sites that pollute the environment, destroy the ecosystem with negative impacts on residents health and livelihoods. Aside from building access roads to their sites that double for residents’ use and providing benefits to a few (i.e. traditional “indigene” rulers) in exchange for favours, residents say that mining companies have done little to support infrastructural development in the host community. The study investigates the direct impact of mining/quarrying on Mpape residents and on the sustainability of their livelihoods using the Sustainable Livelihoods Framework as its theoretical framework. It also looked at the visibility of government’s regulation of the activities of quarry companies and implementation of corporate social responsibility. It then makes clear recommendations for government and quarrying companies. We envisage that civil society, the media, trade unions and human rights bodies will use evidence from this study to demand accountability from mining companies and governments across the world.
