Nowadays it’s common to value academic performance more than liberal art education in school education. The same happens with the geography education. Many geography teachers feel uncertain about which part of geography is more significant and why. Under such circumstance, the author intends to arouse the awareness of the public, especially geography teachers to understand and reflect the unique role of geography on individual development. Meanwhile, the author hopes that geography education should focus on liberal art education by making the teachers aim at cultivating key competencies and promoting individual development rather than emphasizing on geographic knowledge and grades. The author puts forward seven key educational values of geography and strategies on improving geography education through documentary survey, research and teaching practice.

Fengtao Guo is Associate Professor of Geography Education at East China Normal University. His current research is on Geography Curriculum and Evaluation as well as Education for Sustainable Development. He is also interested in technologies in geography teaching and learning. Dr. Guo has published nearly 20 refereed journal papers and books.
