Oral submucous fibrosis(OSMF) is a chronic disease of insidious onset featuring the deposition of fibrous tissue in the submucous layer of the palate, fauces, cheek, lips, pharynx and esophagus resulting in trismus and disability. The incidence of OSMF is still rising alarmingly and there is a dire need to search for an effective and safe remedy because of lack of present therapies to either provide a complete cure or treat the patients at the cost of adverse effects. All the available treatments give only symptomatic relief which are of short duration.Comprehensive search of scientific literature has shown ayurvedic preparations being used in the treatment of OSMF. Natural ayurvedic treatment of OSMF along with life style modification can help in lowering the symptoms of OSMF and may help in curing the disease. Various ayurvedic modalities have shown to reduce symptoms of OSMF & improve health. Looking at all these factors, its also important to carry out clinical trials on the same.
