Power grid is undergoing a revolution all over the world to make it communication-based, data-driven, and make the generated electric power sustainable by integrating renewable/alternative energy power generation to the grid in an effort to limit the emission of undesired gases to the atmosphere. The addition of these features makes the power grid more efficient, stable, resilient, and environmentally friendly, hence smart grid (SG). SG will be a part of our lives and our children’s lives. The future power grid will be microgrid-based at the distribution level and market-based, where the different distribution substations, as independent microgrids, can communicate with one another through wireless communication for enhanced market-based power sharing and enhanced resiliency. The microgrids can isolate themselves from the rest of the grid in the event of an electrical fault or an extreme weather event and prevent cascading faults that could be catastrophic. This book presents the components, features, and functions of smart grid. The intention throughout the book is to explain the material without complex equations and in simple language understandable by the general public.
