The drilling industry's pursuit of cost-effective operations has led to a novel approach for optimizing the rate of penetration (ROP). Extensive research identified data limitations in the Bourgoyne and Young model, particularly regarding bit wear. To address this, a unique method was developed, linking bit wear distribution to formation characteristics, validated using data from three Blue Nile basin wells in Sudan.Statistical analysis with Statistica-12.5 software determined nine coefficients with over 95% confidence. Leveraging the Bourgoyne and Young model, this approach successfully predicted drilling rates, reducing drilling time by 25%. Validation with the PayZone drilling simulator confirmed the accuracy of these predictions. This methodology enables researchers and industry professionals to forecast optimal penetration rates during well planning in the Blue Nile Basin and similar areas. By addressing data limitations through innovative bit wear distribution tied to formation characteristics, this approach offers significant operational and economic benefits in Drilling Engineering Operations.
