This book, dedicated to multimedia data compression methods, is the result of my efforts during 12 years of teaching this course to first year Master's students. It covers the fundamental and practical aspects of lossless and lossy data compression applied to text, image, video and audio. We present respectively, the lossless compression methods (RLE, LZW and HUFFMAN), lossy compression (JPEG), lossy compression (MPEG) which is applied to reduce the size of video files and lossy compression of the audio (MP3).We finish this handout by giving the statements of the exercises carried out in supervised and practical work.

Slimane LARABI uzyskä tytu¿ doktora informatyki w Narodowym Instytucie Politechnicznym w Tuluzie (Francja) w 1991 roku. W styczniu 1992 r. do¿¿czy¿ do wydziäu informatyki Uniwersytetu USTHB, gdzie obecnie zajmuje stanowisko profesora. Jego praca obejmuje wiele tematów, w tym sztuczn¿ inteligencj¿ i wizj¿ komputerow¿.
