Bertolotti syndrome is a recognized cause of chronic low back pain resulting from a lumbosacral transitional vertebra. Cervical ribs are uncommon congenital anomalies arising most frequently from the seventh cervical vertebra and may be associated with thoracic outlet syndrome and other developmental abnormalities. The coexistence of Bertolotti syndrome and bilateral cervical ribs is exceptionally rare and supports the concept of a common developmental disturbance affecting vertebral segmentation and rib formation. This book describes the first documented Iraqi case of Bertolotti syndrome associated with bilateral cervical ribs. The coexistence of these anomalies supports the concept that disturbances of vertebral segmentation may manifest at multiple spinal levels and may be accompanied by rib abnormalities. Recognition of such associations is important when evaluating patients with chronic spinal pain and may contribute to a better understanding of vertebral developmental disorders.

Aamir Jalal Al-Mosawi is an advisor and physician at Training and Development Center of the Iraqi Ministry of Health, Baghdad Medical City. He served as Head of the Iraq branch of the Copernicus Scientists International Panel from 2006 to October 2020. He is a member of the Advisory Council of the International Association of Medical Colleges.
