Application integration has always played an important role in IT. Over time, however, its importance has increased significantly due to the growing interconnectivity of systems. Models and technologies have therefore been developed to simplify and, in some cases, standardise integration processes and the associated technological aspects. With the increasing adoption of cloud solutions in organisations, integration requirements are once again rising significantly. This is also leading to the development of new integration models and solutions. The central question of this thesis is whether the emerging on-demand integration models - in particular, the Integration Platform as a Service (iPaaS) model and the associated software solutions - are establishing themselves as the preferred integration approach within organisations. The thesis therefore first presents the two most important historical approaches (Enterprise Application Integration and Service-Oriented Architecture) from a theoretical perspective and then compares them with the iPaaS approach. The thesis is intended as a general overview and an introduction to the world of application integration.
