This book tells that during the Qing Dynasty Daoguang Years, the British opium trade caused serious threat to the Qing Empire. The Emperor Daoguang was forced to issue an imperial edict and appointed Huguang governor Lin Zexu as the imperial commissioner to ban opium-smoking and opium trade in Guangdong. However, the opium trade was complicated and the corrupted officials acted evilly in collusion with the British businessmen. Lin Zexu's ban on opium-smoking and opium trade faced many difficulties. On the one hand, Charles Elliot, the British overseas business director in China, asked the British businessmen to cooperate with the ban and hand over the opium to ease the contradiction between Lin Zexu and businessmen; on the other hand, he was planning a larger conspiracy.
