Siddhartha, the young Brahmin, weary of his privileged life, embarks on an ascetic journey with his friend Govinda by joining the Samanas. In the city of Savathi, they hear the teachings of the Buddha Gotama. While Govinda chooses to follow the Enlightened One, Siddhartha continues his own path. He later meets the famed courtesan Kamala in the city and plunges into a life of sensual pleasure and material pursuit, until all worldly joys turn to dust. Disgusted and empty, he abandons everything again and resolves to end his life. But by the river, in that moment of ultimate despair, he hears the voice of the flowing waters...
