These are the three most widely circulated and most influential classic primers in Chinese history-collectively known as the "Three Hundred Thousand" (San Bai Qian). The Three-Character Classic is hailed as the "crown of all primers." It was likely completed around the late Song and early Yuan dynasties and is generally attributed to Wang Yinglin. Its content encompasses a broad range of traditional Chinese cultural elements, including ethics and morality, dynastic changes, classical texts and philosophical schools, as well as common knowledge about things and names. The Hundred Family Surnames is a book of Chinese surnames. Its author remains unknown, though scholars generally believe it was written by a Confucian scholar from Qiantang in the early Northern Song Dynasty. It arranges common Chinese surnames into rhymed verses of four characters per line. With the exception of the final line-"Here ends the Hundred Family Surnames"-the entire text consists solely of surnames. The Thousand-Character Classic is composed of one thousand non-repeating Chinese characters (in fact, there are 999). It was created during the Southern Liang Dynasty, when Emperor Wu, wishing to educate his children, ordered that one thousand non-repeating characters be selected from stone inscriptions written by Wang Xizhi. These characters were then handed to Zhou Xingsi, an official of the time, who compiled them into a rhymed text.
