This book is written to commemorate Ms. Rulan Chao Pian, a famous scholar, an authority of Chinese musicology, an educator and the first Chinese female professor at Harvard University. Professor Chao was the firstborn daughter of Zhao Yuanren, a famous Chinese linguist and composer, and doctor Yang Buwei; she was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on April 20, 1922 and moved to many cities at home and abroad with her parents; in 1938, her family moved to the United States. She finished study at Harvard University with the degrees of Bachelor of European Music History (1944), Master of European Music History (1946), Chinese Music Ph.D. (1960), etc. Later, she taught at Harvard University until retired in 1992 as a Professor Emeritus. On November 30, 2013, she died peacefully at home in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States.
