Die letzten Jahre haben ein kontinuierliches und wachsendes Interesse an den massiven und faszinierenden Gedichten jetzt als Sanskrit erlebt. Dieses Interesse hat sich in den fortlaufenden Übersetzungen von Texten, einem stetigen Strom von Publikationen und zahlreichen wissenschaftlichen Treffen von Sanskrit-Epischen Gelehrten offenbart. Eine Reihe dieser Wissenschaftler wurde in Helsinki zusammengesetzt, um den Epischen Abschnitt der 12. Welt-Sanskrit-Konferenz im Sommer 2003 zu bilden. Der vorliegende Band stellt vor der indologischen Gemeinschaft die sechzehn gelernten Papiere, die bei der Konferenz von der angesehenen Gruppe von Wissenschaftlern vorgestellt wurden. Die Themen und Methoden der Autoren sind so vielfältig und vielfältig wie der Inhalt der monumentalen Gedichte selbst, aber jeder Beitrag wirft neues Licht auf einen Aspekt der genetischen und/oder empfänglichen Geschichte dieser Werke, ihre Beziehung zueinander und zu anderen indischen Texten oder die Darstellung und Analyse bestimmter Charaktere und Episoden in den Gedichten.
