This is the first time that this style ― rarely seen outside the confines of Meena villages ― has been used in a children’s book. Meena artist Sunita’s black-and-white drawings rework traditional imagery to illustrate a gamboling tale. Silkscreen-printed by hand onto kraft paper using black and white ink, each book is a numbered edition.

Gita Wolf started Tara Books as an independent publishing house based in India. An original and creative voice in contemporary Indian publishing, she is known for her interest in exploring and experimenting with the form of the book. She has written over twenty books for children and adults. Several have won major international awards and been translated into multiple languages.

Originally from Datasooti village in Rajasthan, Meena artist Sunita was taught to paint by her mother and elder sister. She now lives in Sawai Madhopur in Rajasthan with her husband and two children. Meena art is an ancient Indian tribal art form. Passed on from mother to daughter, it is always the women of the Meena tribe who paint in white onto the brown mud walls and floors of the village.
