The person and oeuvre of Jozef Mehoffer, creator of The Strange Garden, have earned a singular tribute in Cracow. It is his house, Number 26 it the Krupnicza, opened to the public in 1986, following restoration and conservation. Mehoffer purchased this property in 1932 and turned it into the family residence where he spent his late years. It was a focus of artistic and social life, renowned for his wife's musical soirées. Its tranquil garden added to its charms. In the post-war years and subsequently the property deteriorated. The artist's son Zbigniew was the initiator and guiding spirit of the project to turn it into a museum. Now, in accordance with the wishes of the family, the residence belongs to the National Museum in Cracow. The old atmosphere has returned to its interiors, which have been decorated with concern for authenticity. Thanks to the deposits, from the family as well as from the Museum's own collections, the House is now once again the repository of numerous works by Mehoffer, many of them from the Mloda Polska period - oil paintings, stained-glass, drawings, designs etc. - a total of about a hundred works in the permanent exhibition, which also comprises furniture and other items from the old interior decoration. The garden, which has recently been restored to its former glory, resembling its appearance in Mehoffer's times, adds a special touch to the exhibition. Both house and garden are used for concerts and other special events. The National Museum in Cracow keeps a separate deposit of sixteen monumental cartoons of the Fribourg stained-glass windows made in 1895-1918. Three of them are in the Twentieth-Century Polish Art Exhibition Gallery in the Museum's Main Building. They make up a splendid and salient contribution to the abundant collection of works by many outstanding Mloda Polska artists. The remaining cartoons from this collection are exhibited for special occasions.
