Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) took up painting full-time when he was 35 years old, after an intense life as a sailor a succesful stockbroker. His early painting is reminiscent of Pissarro while he was udner the influence of the Barbizon painters. Like all Post-Impressionist artist, Gauguin passed through an Impressionist phase but became dissatisfied with the limitations of the style and advanced beyond it.
