Antes de escribir "La barraca", Blasco Ibáñez había participado en mítines y altercados callejeros y había sido condenado en un consejo de guerra a cuatro años de prisión. En marzo de 1898 fue elegido diputado por Cullera en reconocimiento de sus servicios en favor de los oprimidos. "La barraca" es el alegato de la vida dura e injusta que los habitantes de la huerta valenciana han de soportar frente a los propietarios ociosos de la ciudad.
