Focused on the utopian theories of urbanism propounded by members of the Situationist International, an influential European artists' collective founded in 1957 by French writer and avant-garde filmmaker Guy Debord, this catalogue illustrates a diverse array of works dating from the 1950s and 60s that include paintings, posters and photocollages by such artists as Asger Jorn and Pinot Gallizio as well as numerous sculptural assemblages, drawings, architectual models and other pieces produced by Dutch painter and experimental artist Constant as documentation of his visionary New Babylon urban project. Eight essays (one reprinted) include discussions of the radical critiques of art and society embodied in Debord's writings on postwar consumer culture, the political and social concerns informing the Situationist principles of "psychogeography" and "unitary urbanism" and the theme of the labyrinth in Constant's oeuvre.
