Low Power Circuit Design Using Advanced CMOS Technology is a summary of lectures from the first Advanced CMOS Technology Summer School (ACTS) 2017. The slides are selected from the handouts, while the text was edited according to the lecturers talk.ACTS is a joint activity supported by the IEEE Circuit and System Society (CASS) and the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society (SSCS). The goal of the school is to provide society members as well researchers and engineers from industry the opportunity to learn about new emerging areas from leading experts in the field. ACTS is an example of high-level continuous education for junior engineers, teachers in academe, and students. ACTS was the results of a successful collaboration between societies, the local chapter leaders, and industry leaders. This summer school was the brainchild of Dr. Zhihua Wang, with strong support from volunteers from both the IEEE SSCS and CASS. In addition, the local companies, Synopsys China and Beijing IC Park, provided support.This first ACTS was held in the summer 2017 in Beijing. The lectures were given by academic researchers and industry experts, who presented each 6-hour long lectures on topics covering process technology, EDA skill, and circuit and layout design skills. The school was hosted and organized by the CASS Beijing Chapter, SSCS Beijing Chapter, and SSCS Tsinghua Student Chapter. The co-chairs of the first ACTS were Dr. Milin Zhang, Dr. Hanjun Jiang and Dr. Liyuan Liu. The first ACTS was a great success as illustrated by the many participants from all over China as well as by the publicity it has been received in various media outlets, including Xinhua News, one of the most popular news channels in China.

Über die Autorinnen und Autoren

Milin Zhang received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in electronic engineering from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 2004 and 2006, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in the Electronic and Computer Engineering Department, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Hong Kong. After finishing her doctoral studies, she worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn). She joined Tsinghua University as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering in 2016. Her research interests include designing of traditional and various non-traditional imaging sensors, such as polarization imaging sensors and focal-plane compressive acquisition image sensors. She is also interested in brain-machine-interface (BMI) and relative biomedical sensing applications and new sensor designs. She has received the Best Paper Award of the BioCAS Track of the 2014 International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS), and the Best Paper Award (1st place) of the 2015 Biomedical Circuits and Systems Conference (BioCAS). She received the Thousand Youth Talents Award in 2016.

Jan Van der Spiegel is a Professor of the Electrical and Systems Engineering Department, and Associate Dean for Professional Programs of the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Pennsylvania. He is the former chair of the Electrical Engineering and interim chair of the Electrical and Systems Engineering Departments. Dr. Van der Spiegel received his Masters degree in Electro-Mechanical Engineering and his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Leuven, Belgium. His primary research interests are in mixed-mode VLSI design, CMOS vision sensors for polarization imaging, biologically based image sensors and sensory information processing systems, low-power brain machine-interfaces, and micro-sensor technology. He is the author of over 180 journal and conference papers and holds 4 patents. He is a fellow of the IEEE and recipient of the 2007 EAB Major Educational Innovation Award. He received the IEEE Third Millennium Medal, the UPS Foundation Distinguished Education Chair and the Bicentennial Class of 1940 Term Chair. He was awarded the Christian and Mary Lindback Foundation, and the S. Reid Warren Award for Distinguished Teaching, and the Presidential Young Investigator Award. He has served on several IEEE program committees (IEDM, ICCD, ISCAS and ISSCC) and was the technical program chair of the 2007 International Solid-State Circuit Conference (ISSCC 2007). He is an associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Circuits and Systems (TBCAS), and is on the Editorial Board of the Proceedings of the IEEE and Sensors and Actuators A. He is a member of the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society where he served as the chapters Chairs coordinator. He is the 20162017 President of the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society. He is also a member of Phi Beta Delta and Tau Beta Pi.

Franco Maloberti received the Laurea Degree in Physics (Summa cum Laude) from the University of Parma, Parma Italy, in 1968 and the Dr. Honoris Causa degree in Electronics from the Instituto Nacional de Astrofisica, Optica y Electronica (Inaoe), Puebla, Mexico in 1996. He was a Visiting Professor at ETH-PEL, Zurich in 1993 and at EPFL-LEG, Lausanne in 2004. He was Professor of Microelectronics and Head of the Micro Integrated Systems Group University of Pavia, Pavia, Italy and the TI/J.Kilby Analog Engineering Chair Professor at the Texas A&M University. He was also the Distinguished Microelectronic Chair Professor at the University of Texas at Dallas. Currently, he is Professor at the University of Pavia, Italy and Honorary Professor, University of Macau, China SAR. His professional expertise is in the design, analysis, and characterization of integrated circuits and analog digital applications, mainly in the areas of switched capacitor circuits, data converters, interfaces for telecommunication and sensor systems, and CAD for analog and mixed A-D design. He has written more than 550 published papers, five books and holds 34 patents. He was in 1992 recipient of the XII Pedriali Prize for his technical and scientific contributions to national industrial production. He was corecipient of the 1996 Institute of Electrical Engineers (U.K.) Fleming Premium for the paper "CMOS Triode Transistor Transconductor for high-frequency continuous-time filters." The research activity of Prof. Franco Maloberti is a proper balance of scientific innovation and technical advance for the industry. He received the 1999 IEEE CAS Society Meritorious Service Award, the 2000 CAS Society Golden Jubilee Medal, and the IEEE Millenium Medal. He received the ESSCIRC 2007 Best Paper Award and the IEEJ Workshop 2007 and 2010 Best Paper Award. He received the IEEE CAS Society 2013 Mac Van Valkenburg Award. He is a Fellow of IEEE.
