Alcolista incallito con un passato criminale alle spalle, Dexter McCray si risveglia dopo una delle sue sbronze. È a casa, accanto a lui c'è l'amico Gregg, sceriffo della contea. Dexter però non ricorda nulla di cosa sia successo la notte prima. Pare che, ubriaco com'era, abbia minacciato la ex moglie con una pistola e, alla guida del suo trattore, si sia avventurato nei campi sotto casa, fino al boschetto che li circonda. Quando, poche ore dopo, proprio in quel bosco ritrova il corpo senza vita di Jessica, una ragazza di sedici anni, il panico lo assale. Per quanto ne sa, l'assassino potrebbe essere proprio lui. Ha paura che possano accusarlo di omicidio, quindi non chiama la polizia e decide di indagare per conto proprio. Tra quegli alberi si nascondono orribili segreti, ma Dexter non arriverà a scoprirli da solo. Ad aiutarlo sarà Jessica. O meglio, qualcosa che di Jessica sembra aver preso tutte le sembianze.
