It is an extract of the memoirs of Marquis Giuseppe Salvago Raggi (1866-1946) on the greatest Italian diplomat during the last century. He was the Minister of Italy in Beijing from 1898 until 1902. He was also one of the main pillars at the defense of the Legations in spite of the fact that he did not appear among the defenders. He never bragged about it and he speaks quite frankly about it since he never thought about publishing his memoirs which became available only in 1968. He explains in details of the Killing of the German Minister, Ketteler, the part of the diplomats' wives in the looting of the Forbidden City.
