Josef Albers (1888-1976) è uno dei massimi esponenti dell'astrattismo geometrico del Novecento. Grazie all'attività artistica condotta al Bauhaus e grazie al ruolo di insegnante, che rivestì allo stesso Bauhaus, e poi in America, presso il Black Mountain College e presso la scuola d'arte della Yale University, di cui fu direttore, Josef Albers ha potuto esercitare una straordinaria influenza verso un'intera generazione di artisti. Non a caso, è stato il primo artista americano vivente cui il Metropolitan Museum of Art di New York ha dedicato nel 1970 una mostra antologica personale, concentrata in particolare sugli Omaggi al quadrato, celebre serie di dipinti alla quale Albers si dedica fino alla morte, avvenuta nel 1976. Questo catalogo, edito in occasione della mostra ideata per Perugia da Nicholas Fox Weber, direttore della Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, intende far conoscere l'aspetto spirituale sotteso all'arte di Albers presentando una serie di opere che meglio esprimono la personale religiosità e la profonda immersione nel cattolicesimo dell'artista, teso verso la ricerca di quella che è stata definita una "geometria dell'assoluto". Charlotte y Peter Fiell son dos autoridades en historia, teoría y crítica del diseño y han escrito más de sesenta libros sobre la materia, muchos de los cuales se han convertido en éxitos de ventas. También han impartido conferencias y cursos como profesores invitados, han comisariado exposiciones y asesorado a fabricantes, museos, salas de subastas y grandes coleccionistas privados de todo el mundo. Los Fiell han escrito numerosos libros para TASCHEN, entre los que se incluyen 1000 Chairs, Diseño del siglo XX, El diseño industrial de la A a la Z, Scandinavian Design y Diseño del siglo XXI.

Josef Albers (1888-1976) was one of the foremost geometric abstract artists of the twentieth century. He made his mark initially as an exceptionally graceful and competent figurative artist, always interested in economy of line and in precise articulation, determined to keep the personal out of his work while revealing the universal and timeless truths of earthly existence.
While at the Bauhaus, where he was for longer than any other individual, Albers was elevated from the position of student to Master, and began to have a tremendous influence as an art teacher. That impact continued when, with his wife, the textile artist Anni Albers, he emigrated to the United States and began to teach at the experimental Black Mountain College. In 1970, Josef Albers was the first living American artist to have a solo retrospective exhibition at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, with the emphasis on his "Homages to the Square", a series of color paintings that he made until his death in 1976.

Josef Albers: Spirituality and Rigor has been conceived by Nicholas Fox Weber, Executive Director of the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, for the National Museum of Perugia to introduce a range of Josef's work that makes manifest his personal religiosity as well as his deep immersion in Catholicism. Weber knew Albers well, and has made a concerted effort with this exhibition to make manifestthe spiritual aspect that underlies his art.
