Il volume è il catalogo della mostra di Roma (Museo Nazionale di Castel Sant'Angelo, 11 luglio - 9 novembre 2008). La rassegna intende documentare, con circa ottanta opere esposte, quell'ampio arco cronologico che va dal II secolo a.C. sino alla matura Età dei Lumi, durante il quale l'Egitto da "storia" diventa mito e l'"Egittomania" si trasforma in "Egittofilia". Provenienti dalle collezioni più prestigiose (Musei Capitolini, Musei Vaticani, Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli, Louvre, Pergamon Museum...), le opere, selezionate da un comitato scientifico di grande rilievo, illustrano in modo chiaro e fitto di riferimenti culturali il rapporto intenso e secolare tra Egitto e Roma, e guidano alla scoperta dei misteri egizi di Roma (obelischi, templi, serapeo ecc.).
