Duben si è diplomata all'Arnavutköy American College for Girls (Robert College) e ha conseguito la laurea in Scienze Politiche all'Agnes Scott College nel 1963. Dopo aver conseguito un master nello stesso campo presso l'Università di Chicago nel 1965, abbandona gli studi di dottorato nel 1969 per concentrarsi sull'arte.
