Il libro presenta, per la prima volta, gli affreschi degli artisti e fratelli fiamminghi Matthijs (1550-1583) e Paul (1554-1626) Bril. I due fratelli trasferitisi a Roma da Anversa nell'ultimo quarto del secolo, divennero i paesaggisti più famosi d'Italia, influenzando notevolmente la pittura del paesaggio del Settecento. Le commissioni più importanti affidate ai Bril provenivano dal Vaticano, dove si trova gran parte dei lavori, ma anche dai membri delle grandi famiglie aristocratiche italiane, i cui palazzi sono spesso decorati dai loro affreschi di paesaggi e vedute marine. Nel volume sono esaminati gli affreschi e presentate nuove scoperte sui committenti e sugli edifici per i quali furono eseguite le opere.
