Das Büro von Ralph Johnson und Perkins & Will hat schon fast überall auf der Welt gebaut. Sein lebhaftes Interesse am modernen Internationalismus steht nur scheinbar im Widerspruch zu einer sorgfältigen Beachtung von Faktoren wie Kontext, Platz und Identität des Raumes. Mit dem Begriff des "normativen Modernismus" versuchte der Architekturkritiker Thomas Fisher das Werk von Perkins & Will zu beschreiben. Die Kombination eines Entwurfdenkens, das streng an kommunalen Aufgaben orientiert ist und des künstlerischen Muts zu neuen Formen, sowohl im urbanen wie natürlichen Umfeld, ist der eigentliche Schlüssel zum Verständnis der in dieser Monographie dargestellten Bauten.
