Born Georg Kern in 1938 in Deutschbaselitz, a village that would be part of East Germany for many decades, Baselitz began painting as an adolescent in the wake of the New Objectivity movement. In 1968 he produced his first upside-down work, and it is through this simple but original linguistic device, subsequently used in a systematic manner, that he demonstrates the intrinsic value of painting without turning to abstract forms.
This volume presents an exhaustive survey of his career, as well as his paintings, it includes an entire notebook of drawings, important in that Baselitz considers it to be a complete work which find in itself the reasons to exist.
