In contrast to the cliche that sees it as a gray industrial city with little inclination for the enticements of poetic flanerie, in the twentieth century Milan inspired pages and pictures of enchanted and ironical metaphysical beauty, from Savinio's Ascolto il tuo cuore, citta to De Sica and Zavattini's Miracolo a Milano.
For his journey into Milan's trade fair, a place powerfully symbolic of the city's life, the photographer and traveler Giuseppe Ripa has taken the city's different souls into account, condensed into spaces and figures that bring to life a complex microcosm where reality and fantasy find an unexpected meeting point.
Ripa's pictures are a response to the requirement to read space as a primary element in the relationship between the human being and the world, a measure of a relationship that is constantly evolving.
In an atmosphere of suspended time, a place of almost surreal apparitions, the photographer seems to amuse himself by arresting the frenetic activity that is a natural attribute of such places, doing so innocently and lightly. The very figures and objects play the part, in the form of mysterious apparition, in a silent, graceful but resolute, reinvention of reality.
Giuseppe Ripa (1962) stands out for the poetical force and profound evocativeness of themes, such as memory, identity, and the fate of man, found in his images.
