"The Carapace" is a collection of nineteen short stories framed within a narrative structure. Fabrizio, the narrator, is a journalist who chronicles a year of his life in a diary, during which he faces a fierce battle for his health as well as other significant changes. Fearing that he may not have much time left, he hastens to complete his stories. He chooses to title his collection The Carapace, referring to the tough outer shell of certain animals, such as turtles and seashells, which protects their softest parts and often remains intact long after their death. Thus, the title evokes a kind of shield with which the narrator, Fabrizio, confronts his illness, while also symbolising the enduring imprint of the message he hopes to leave to his readers through writing. Within this framework are interspersed the short stories, tales within the tale, that branch off from the main thread of the diary to explore various themes through the voices and experiences of different characters. The author depicts scenes from their lives without prejudice or moral judgement, refraining from defining who is right or wrong. In this way, the world we live in is presented to us: a complex and challenging reality which, however, is not entirely negative. Many of the stories, in fact, reveal the brighter side of human nature, especially when individuals rediscover within themselves the desire to believe once more in emotions and in life itself.
