Yervant Gianikian and Angela Ricci Lucchi visited the Soviet Union at the end of the 1980s. It was during the closing years of the Soviet Empire, and the words on everyone’s lips were glasnost and perestroika. They wanted to gather the memories of the cinematographic literary and artistic Russian avant-garde of the ’20s and ’30s, seeking out survivors and listening to their life stories. They both had the habit of filling up notebooks with thoughts, drawings, notes and recipes: a hotchpotch which reflects their own way of working. The volume features a selection of pages from these notebooks, reproduced here for the first time, thus providing us with access to the very source of their inspirations. Essays by Corinne Diserens and Eva Fabbris follow, along with an interview by Andrea Lissoni examining the work of two of the most important artists and filmmakers on the contemporary scene.

La carrière de Yervant Gianikian (né en 1942, Merano, vit et travaille à Milan) et Angela Ricci Lucchi (née en 1942, Lugo di Romagna, vit et travaille à Milan) a débuté en 1975. Après leurs premiers « films parfumés », les cinéastes expérimentaux ont tourné leur intérêt vers l'exploitation des images d'archives. Grâce à leur « caméra analytique », à la fois concept et outil technique essentiel à leur pratique, les cinéastes retravaillent ces matériaux pour créer des œuvres cinématographiques qui offrent au spectateur un nouveau point d'accès aux images passées. Ils ont présenté leurs travaux dans de nombreux festivals internationaux et exposés dans différents musées comme le MoMA, New York ; le Jeu de Paume, Paris ; la Tate Modern, à Londres et le Hangar Bicocca, Milan. Ils ont participé trois fois à la Biennale de Venise (la 49e édition, organisée par Harald Szeemann ; la 55e édition, organisée par Massimiliano Gioni ; la 56e édition, à laquelle ils ont reçu le Lion d'or). En 2017, ils participent à la documenta 14 Cassel / Athènes.
