"...this series follows a format that is uncomplicated and therefore extremely user-friendly ... The first two publications of the Brill Josephus Project have adequately satisfied the publisher's promise of being the first comprehensive literary-historical commentary on the works of Flavius Josephus in English ... they have established a formidable, yet highly achievable standard for subsequent volumes in the series ... an indispensable source of competing critical perspectives ... correctly been termed an "indispensable source for all scholarly study of Judea from about 200 BCE to 75 CE"(Maxon ix)." - Marco Frenschkowski, in: Theologische Literaturzeitung, 2003 "The commentary is generally wide-ranging and very readable." - F.G. Downing, in: Journal for the Study of the Old Testament, 2002
Flavius Josephus, the first-century Jewish historian, is among the most important writers from classical antiquity. The significance of the works of Josephus as sources for our understanding of biblical history and of the political history of Palestine under Roman rule, can scarcely be overestimated. This is the second volume published in this commentary series, which is the first comprehensive literary-historical commentary on the works of Flavius Josephus in English. Flavius Josephus: Life of Josephus is also published by Brill in paperback (ISBN 0 391 04205 x, still available)

Hardcover. Zustand: new. Hardcover. Flavius Josephus is without a doubt the most important witness to ancient Judaism from the close of the biblical period to the aftermath of the destruction of the temple in A.D. 70. His four surviving works - "Judean War", "Judean Antiquities", "Life", and "Against Apion" - provide the narrative stucture for interpreting the other, more fragmentary written sources and physical remains from this period. His descriptions of the Temple, the Judean countryside, Jewish-Roman relations and conflicts, and groups and institutions of ancient Judea have become indispensable for the student of early Judaism, the Classicist, and the reader of the New Testament alike. The priestly aristocrat Josephus was born in A.D. 37 and died around the year 100. After fighting against the Romans in the war of 66-73/4 and surrendering in the earliest phase of the campaign, he moved to Rome where he began a productive literary career. His four surviving works in thirty Greek volumes are widely excerpted for historical purposes, but still not often read in their literary and historical contexts. This project aims to assist every serious reader of Josephus by providing a new literal translation, along with a commentary suggesting literary and historical connnections. This is the second volume published in this commentary series, which is the first comprehensive literary-historical commentary on the works of Flavius Josephus in English.Flavius Josephus: Life of Josephus is also published by Brill in paperback (ISBN 978-03-91-04205-6, still available) Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
