The authors highlight the intertwined and powerful roles of both the image and the body within a contemporary culture that has seemingly devalued language (in favor of the image) and has renewed a "sinful" conception of the body as in constant need of improvement.

James Elkins teaches in the Department of Art History, Theory, and Criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His books include The Object Stares Back, On the Nature of Seeing, What Painting Is; and, also from Cornell, The Poetics of Perspective.
