The ships of the Oliver Hazard Perry-class were designed in the United States in the mid-1970’s as general-purpose escort vessels. They were inexpensive enough to be bought in large quantities and replace older ships. Meant to protect amphibious landing forces, supply and replenishment groups, and merchant convoys from submarines, they also became part of battleship-centric groups and aircraft battle/strike groups.

Rindert van Zinderen Bakker was born in 1944 during the Battle of Arnhem. When he was eight he lived in Paramaribo where he discovered the model sets of ships and planes from a friend’s father. Because you could not only play but also build them he became addicted to modelling. Over the decades he has assembled scores of models of aeroplanes, cars, arms and figurines. But it was the background information given with the models on the boxes or the assembly instructions that made him curious about their historic background. Over the years Rindert van Zinderen Bakker became more and more interested in building models of Dutch navy ships of the recent past. Models which were christened on board of the actual ship gave him many a day’s sailing on a Netherlands frigate. After his retirement in 2009 as principal of a comprehensive modelling fills a good part of his leisure time.
Rindert van Zinderen-Bakker (1944) was principal of the Jan Tin Bergen College in Roosendaal and was interested in model building from an early age. This is his book about the HMCS Haida.
USS Clark (FFG-11) was the fifth ship of the Oliver Hazard Perry class of guided-missile frigates.
The ships were designed in the United States in the mid-1970s as general-purpose escort vessels inexpensive enough to be bought in large quantities to replace World War II-era destroyers and 1960s-era frigates.
Intended to protect convoys, landing forces, supply and replenishment groups.
The frigate was ordered from Bath Iron Works on 27 February 1976 as part of the FY76 program, Clark was laid down on 17 July 1978, launched on 24 March 1979, and commissioned on 9 May 1980. Decommissioned and stricken on 15 March 2000, she was handed over to Poland that same day to become the Polish Navy's Gen. K. Puaski.
