In this report drawn from the committee's November 2001 meeting, participants worked toward the adoption of international requirements for the production and control of vaccines and other biological materials and the establishment of international biological reference materials. Topics included with the discussion of international guidelines include handling of vaccines for cholera, Group C meningococcal diseases, pertussis, spongiform encephalitis and HIV and recommendations for cell and blood management. International reference materials discussed included those about handling biological substances, in vitro diagnostic materials, and materials associated with transmissible spongiform encephalitis. They discussed a human antibody against the human platelet antigen 5b, and covered a number of topics specific to blood products and related substances. Also under discussion were cytokines, growth factors and endocrinological substances. Annexes include guidelines on the evaluation of vaccines and procedures to ensure the safety of blood products.
