The Lead bank is expected to assume a major role in the development of banking and credit in the allotted districts. It will primarily be responsible for surveying the credit needs, developing a network of branches and extending adequate credit facilities through the co-operation of other banks operating in the district. The Lead bank is also expected to maintain contacts and liaison with government and quasi-government agencies engaged in development activities. In other words, the lead bank is expected to promote all round development of the allotted district.
