Inhaltsangabe

Rediscover a Victorian reference for Latin study, remade for the curious and the committed. A guide for every student. Whittaker's Improved Edition of Valpy's Gradus ad Parnassum functions as both a rigorous classical dictionary and a highly usable Latin-English lexicon, arranged to assist translation, composition and close reading. As a Latin language reference and Latin vocabulary builder it brings together the breadth of nineteenth-century scholarship with practical guidance for metre and form, making it useful to students of Latin, teachers and readers approaching ancient Roman literature. The book's expanded entries and systematic organisation help resolve vocabulary puzzles quickly while also supporting sustained study: from casual look-ups during translation to more demanding work in academic Latin studies, the Gradus ad Parnassum edition rewards both fleeting curiosity and deeper research. Its balance of precise headwords, clear cross-references and editorial care reflects the Victorian appetite for thorough classical instruction, so even modern readers unfamiliar with period practice will find the Valpy Latin dictionary approachable. Valpy's edition carries historical weight as a representative of nineteenth-century classics and a Victorian era reference: it reflects the priorities and methods of classical education in its time, and offers modern readers a window into how Latin was taught. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike. Whether you are a casual reader of Latin prose and verse, a student refining vocabulary and metre, a teacher assembling essential classical education resources, or a collector of classical literature, this Valpy Latin dictionary sits equally at home on a study desk and a display shelf, ready to be consulted, admired and used. For anyone building a reference set of nineteenth-century classics or seeking a reliable companion for classical studies, this edition offers both historical context and immediate, everyday usefulness.
