A deft invitation to the curious mind: an affable stranger arrives, and the room-and the city-tilt with the slow gravity of hidden motives. The Affable Stranger is a refined public domain novella of nineteenth century literature, where social deception themes and moral suspense narrative unfold in a vivid urban british milieu. In a victorian britain setting, everyday manners become instruments, and first impressions are architectural-sharp, persuasive, and rarely harmless. This is classic short fiction that rewards patient reading, offering a quietly tense exploration of reputation, vanity, and the ethics of appearance. With Alpha Editions' restoration, the work is brought fully into today's sensibility while honouring its historical texture. It is more than a reprint-more than nostalgia. For libraries and collectors, for book clubs seeking a compact, thought-provoking read, this title becomes a cultural treasure that speaks to both casual readers and classic-literature connoisseurs. The text, faithful to its era yet accessible now, invites discussion of identity, truth, and the social rituals that define us. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint - a collector's item and a cultural treasure. This is classic detective fiction and gothic social drama wedded to a sharp, humane sensibility-perfect for rediscovery and reverent rereading.

Peter Gilchrist McArthur, born on March 10, 1866, in Ekfrid Township, Canada West, was a Canadian writer, poet, and farmer. He was the son of Peter McArthur and Catherine McLennan, both of whom hailed from Scotland. McArthur was educated at the collegiate and model school in Strathroy and later attended the University of Toronto. After leaving university in 1889, he worked as a reporter for the Toronto Daily Mail and then moved to New York City the following year. He became the editor of Truth from 1895 to 1897 and contributed to various publications, including poems, articles, and humor pieces. In 1902, McArthur moved to London, England, where he wrote for Punch, Review of Reviews, and The Daily Paper. He published To be taken with salt: being an essay on teaching one's grandmother to suck eggs in 1903. He later returned to Ontario in 1908, where he farmed and contributed to local publications, eventually publishing works such as In Pastures Green and The Red Cow and Her Friends. McArthur passed away on October 28, 1924, in London, Ontario, after undergoing surgery at the age of 58.
