Francesc Xavier Hernandez Cardona is a historian and tenured professor of social sciences at the University of Barcelona. In recent years he has specialized in military history and has published various works on war and conflicts, including works on the War of the Spanish Succession, the Punic Wars, and the Spanish Civil War. He has also studied singular battles like those of Empuries (195 BC), Muret (1213) or the Battle of the Ebro (1938), and has also participated in the process of making museum out of different military monuments like the Iberian fortress of Calafell, the Renaissance walls of Ibiza, and the walls of Ceuta. Xavier Rubio Campillo is a computer engineer and researcher at the University of Barcelona. He is specialized in the study of military conflicts through artificial intelligence, geographic information systems, and game theory. He has worked on the simulation of galley combats and in the recreation of Caesars wars. In the field of military archeology he has coordinated pioneering experiments in the exploration of battlefields of the War of the Spanish Succession: Almenar y Salamanca. As a member of the ESTOC (European Studies of Terrain of Conflict) university network he has participated in the exploration of diverse European battlefields from the 16th and 17th centuries. He has contributed articles to International journals like Ancient Warfare and has written monographs on 17th Century battles (Almenar). He is the administrator of the specialized military history website www.polemos.org.

Sherlock Holmes había dado ya muestras de su genio en Estudio en Escarlata y en El signo de los cuatro, pero los lectores no se dieron cuenta de su genialidad. Entonces a Conan Doyle ¿a Watson? se le ocurrió la brillante idea de pasear al detective por una serie de relatos cortos. Empezó publicándolos en la revista Strand en julio de 1891. En octubre, cuando sólo se habían publicado tres historias, los editores le imploraban más aventuras de Holmes, el público agotaba las ediciones y Doyle subía sus tarifas. La presión del público era tal, que antes de terminar los doce relatos que componen este volumen, el autor empezó a acariciar la idea de acabar con su criatura.
