The myriad protective deities recognized and worshipped by Tibetans have their roots in the shamanic and Bon practices that preceded the introduction of Buddhism to Tibet. Until the present work, little was known of this cult due both to the secrecy with which the Tibetan followers guarded it, and the fact that the few written records were to be found only in rare texts, employing difficult to interpret, archaic language. The author spent some three years in Kalimpong in the early 1950s during which was able to gain the confidence of three local incarnate lamas. Information gleaned directly from these sources, together with their assistance in translation of obscure texts, formed the basis of this book.
