Professor Stephen Smale has had a long and multifaceted career. A er spending more than 30 years at the University of California, Berkeley, he joined the mathematics faculty at City University of Hong Kong from 1995– 2001 and again from 2009– 2016. He has received numerous awards and honors, including the Fields Medal (1966), for his work in areas such as topology, dynamical systems, complexity, and computation. He is also an avid mineral collector and has published two beautifully photographed books showcasing his impressive private collection.
