Reseña del editor:
The Yom-Kippur War: Trauma, Memory and Myth is an insightful and innovative addition to the extensive literature on political myths. This book deconstructs various myths that evolved around the Yom Kippur War, revealing their inner principles and mainly the manipulative mechanisms of their creators. This book also provides new and surprising answers to major issues that concern Israeli society: Why does a major part of the Israeli population adhere to the mythical image of the Yom Kippur War as an "omission" rather than acclaim it as a "great victory"? What myths evolved around this war and mainly - who created them and to what avail? How did these myths shape collective identities? What explains the uncritical acceptance of legendary accounts in modern societies? This book shows that the perception shared by many Israelis, of the Yom Kippur War as a traumatic collective experience, was functional for right and left wing political circles, intellectual circles and sociological distinct generations. During four decades (1973-2013) that perception shaped attitudes toward the Israeli-Arab/Palestinian issues. Tirza Hechter's book is based on a comprehensive and systematic doctoral research (1997) and a follow-up research which is being published here for the first time.
