Set in the ancient city of Kano in the northern part of Nigeria of the early 80s, this short novel tells the story of Kabira, a courageous 13-year old girl who, against the norms of the community where she was raised, shunned all attempts by her parents to marry her off early and opted to go to school. Every step of the way, there was a challenge awaiting her. With determination unusual for her age especially in the type of patriarchal society in which the story is set, she overcame every one of those challenges and ended up becoming the toast of her community. Kabira's story can be simply summed up in the common saying: “where there is a will, there is a way.” Considered against the historic resolution of the United Nations General Assembly on November 21, 2014 that saw all Member States condemning and agreeing to end child, early and forced marriage, the publication of Kabira could not have come at a better time. It is currently being used as an advocacy tool in the prevention of child marriage campaign. Originally written in English, it has been translated to Italian and is curently being translated into French. The author, Asma'u Baikie, who hails from Jigawa State, in northern Nigeria got her motivation to write Kabira from a couple of incidents that took place when she was in secondary school. So one would not be wrong to say that she wrote from a more or less first-hand experience. That is the feeling one gets reading the story. The novel is written in simple narrative style that will catch and sustain the attention of readers, especially young readers. It is highly recommended as literature text in secondary schools and upper primary schools. It is good leisure reading for mothers and fathers too. It teaches many life lessons. One of the high points of the novel is its non-judgmental stance on issues of very sensitive nature. This makes it a good reference for cross cultural and religious understanding.
