This book is the first English book to present the theory of flux modulation and name the flux modulation machine family. It explains the phenomenon of flux modulation in electrical machines based on the well-known “modulation” in power electronics; clarifies the difference and connection between different flux modulation machines through the topological evolution, comparatively analyzes their commonality and individuality characteristics under the same theoretical framework; and finally proposes the R&D ideas and development frontiers of high-performance machine topologies. The flux modulation theory is the main feature of this book, which is the expansion of the classical machine theory, providing readers in the field of electrical machines with a new vision and more design options.

Ronghai Qu received the B.E.E. and M.S.E.E. degrees in electrical engineering from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 1993 and 1996, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Wisconsin Madison, in 2002. From 2003 to 2010, he was a Senior Electrical Engineer with the General Electric (GE) Global Research Center, NY. Since 2010, he has been a Professor at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China. Prof. Qu has long been engaged in research on motor design, drive, and control. Because of his contributions to the basic theory and application technology of flux modulation machines, he was elected an IEEE Fellow in 2018. He has won the First Prize of Science and Technology Progress Award of Hubei Province, the Gold Award and Special Commendation Gold Award of the 47th Geneva International Invention Exhibition, the First Prize of Technology Invention of Science and Technology Award of China Electrotechnical Society, and the 7th Japan Nagamori Awards. He has published more than 400 papers, 12 of which won the IEEE Best Paper Award, and 2 are highly cited papers. He also owns more than 180 invention patents.
Dawei Li received his B.E.E. degree in electrical engineering from Harbin Institute of Technology, Beijing, China, in 2010, and his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), Wuhan, China, in 2015. He began his academic career at HUST as an assistant professor from 2015 to 2019, was promoted to associate professor from 2019 to 2021, and has been serving as a professor since 2021. He has long been dedicated to research on the analysis, design, and control of flux modulation machines.
In recognition of his contributions to the novel design methodology and application technology of flux modulation machines, he has received several prestigious awards, including the First Prize of the Mechanical Industry Science and Technology Award, the First Prize of the Science and Technology Progress Award of Hubei Province, the Special Commendation Gold Award at the 49th Geneva International Invention Exhibition, and the First Prize of Technological Invention under the Science and Technology Award of China Electrotechnical Society. In addition, he was ranked among the Top 2% of global scientists in 2023. He also holds more than 130 invention patents.
Xiang Ren received B.Eng. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China, in 2014 and 2019, respectively. From 2019 to 2022, he worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Since 2023, he has been a Research Fellow at the University of Nottingham, UK. His research focuses on the analysis and design of permanent magnet machines.
Yuting Gao received the B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China, in 2012 and 2017, respectively. From 2017 to 2023, she has been a postdoctoral fellow at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Karlsruhe, Germany, and Nagoya Institute of Technology, Nagoya, Japan, successively. Since 2023, she has been a Professor at Wuhan University, China. Her research interests include the design and analysis of flux modulation permanent-magnet machines. She was the recipient of Best Paper Award from the International Conference on Electrical Machines (ICEM) at 2020, and serves as an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Transportation Electrification and IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications.
