Dr. S. Suriyanarayanan currently holds the position of Professor and Associate Dean of Research at JSS Science and Technology University, Mysuru. Previously, he served as the Deputy Director of Research at the Vinayaka Mission’s Research Foundation (Deemed University), India. He completed his Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences at Bharathiar University, Tamil Nadu, India. His research expertise spans environmental monitoring, radiation ecology, and environmental microbiology. He also served as a Post-Doctoral Researcher in Italy and Science officer for SCOPE (Scientific Committee of Problems of the Environment) in China.
Dr. Shivaraju H. P. is an Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Environmental Sciences at JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research, Mysuru, India. A prominent environmental researcher, he specializes in pollution, with a focus on plastic pollution and waste management. He earned his Ph.D. in Environmental Science from the University of Mysore and has over 14 years of expertise in environmental pollution remediation through sustainable and feasible solutions. His research delves into the sources, transportation, and impacts of emerging contaminants, including plastic pollution, on the environment and human health. Dr. Shivaraju's pioneering studies on emerging pollutants and microplastics in aqueous environments have significantly advanced the understanding of their fate and transport within ecosystems.
Dr. Kandiah Pakeerathan holds a Ph.D. in Agriculture from the University of Sydney, Australia, with specialization in Molecular Plant Protection. Presently, he is working as a Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka. He has almost 15 years of experience in teaching and research in Plant Protection and Environmental Sciences. His areas of expertise include: Molecular biology and biotechnology, plant protection, and impact of microplastics on soil organisms and environmental issues. His research primarily focuses on finding sustainable and smart solutions to various problems faced by the farmers and agro-based industries. His research findings have been cited more than 350 times in various reputed journals and books.
The book provides an extensive overview of the sources and impacts of plastic pollution, exploring micro-plastics in freshwater systems, hazards of micro-plastic contamination in agriculture, and innovative reuse of plastic waste. The book containing 25 chapters from differentcountries highlights various aspects of terrestrial plastic pollution and its management strategies, and the environmental and health hazards across different regions. The key studies including microbiological degradation of plastic materials, production of wood-plastics composites, risks of plastic wastes and community driven initiatives to tackle plastic pollution, microplastics pollution in agricultural settings and freshwater ecosystem, use of technology for effective sorting methods, and use of waste plastics for sustainable practices provide a deep understanding of approaches to mitigate theseproblems. The methods discussed in this book contribute significantly to achieving Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG-12 on “Responsible Consumption and Production”. This publication wouldnot only serveas a resource for understanding the scope of plastic pollution but also aims to inspire action and collaboration among researchers, policymakers, environmental professionals, and students.
