From mythical islands located in an uncertain part of the Indies, to the destination of scores of navigators, soldiers, traders, priests, and mere adventurers only decades later, the Moluccas quickly became known in Europe for their fabulous riches. So fabulous, in fact, that a radical proposal to cross half the world along a to-be-discovered route seduced the Spanish Crown. Many textual narratives of the circumnavigation have survived, but no less important is the testimony recorded in the cartography prepared before and after the mission. The journey that this work proposes will transport the reader to different historical periods and far-flung regions of the world. While written for a non-specialist audience, the book likewise offers new interpretations and reveals the results of in situ examinations of original manuscripts. Probing the interface between science and art, the Cartography of Magellan tells the story of the first voyage around the world through a privileged graphical witness: nautical cartography.

Über die Autorinnen und Autoren

Joaquim Alves Gaspar é Oficial da Armada (reformado), especialista em navegação e cartografia matemática, e doutorado em Gestão da Informação – Sistemas de Informação Geográfica. É actualmente investigador do Centro Interuniversitário de História da Ciência e Tecnologia, na Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa, onde lidera o projecto de investigação Medea-Chart, financiado pelo Conselho Europeu de Investigação. A sua área de investigação é a história da cartografia náutica, no âmbito da qual tem vindo a desenvolver novos métodos de análise cartométrica e modelação numérica destinadas a melhor se compreender como as cartas medievais e renascentistas eram construídas e utilizadas. De entre os seus trabalhos mais recentes, estão os artigos publicados em revistas internacionais sobre o planisfério de Cantino (Imago Mundi, 2012), o mapa-mundo de Gerard Mercator (Imago Mundi, 2014, 2015; Journal of Navigation, 2016), a relação entre cartas náuticas e mapas geográficos no Renascimento (Journal of Early Modern History, 2019) e a génese da cartografia náutica (Imago Mundi, 2019). Joaquim Alves Gaspar is an Officer of the Portuguese Navy (retired), specialist in navigation and mathematical cartography, with a PhD in Information Management – Geographical Information Systems. He is presently an investigator of the Interuniversity Center for the History of Science and Technology, in the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, now leading project Medea-Chart, supported by the European Research Council. His research area is the history of nautical cartography, in whose scope he developed novel methods of cartometric analysis and numerical modelling, aimed at better understanding how the medieval and early modern charts were constructed and used. Among his most recent works, are the articles published in international journals about the Cantino planisphere (Imago Mundi, 2012), the world map of Gerad Mercator (Imago Mundi, 2014, 2015; Journal of Navigation, 2016), the relation between nautical charts and geographical maps in the Renaissance (Journal of Early Modern History, 2019), and the genesis of nautical cartography (Imago Mundi, 2019).

Šima Krtalić é aluna de doutoramento em História e Filosofia das Ciências na Faculdade de Ciências da Faculdade de Lisboa, e membro do projecto Medea-Chart, financiado pelo Conselho Europeu de Investigação. Tem um BA em Liberal Arts pelo Sarah Lawrence College (EUA) e completou um mestrado em Ciência dos Materiais Arqueológicos pela Universidade de Évora, Portugal. O seu trabalho de investigação está actualmente focado nas técnicas artísticas e práticas artesanais ligadas à criação de cartas náuticas manuscritas dos períodos medieval e pré-moderno. As suas publicações incluem “Anchoring the Image of the Sea: Copying Coastlines on Manuscript Nautical Charts from the Late Middle Ages and Early Modern Period” (Imago Mundi, 2022) e “Two Sixteenth-Century Nautical Charts of the South Atlantic Ocean: An Early Example of Cartography Used at Sea” (Journal of Navigation, 2023). Šima Krtalić is а doctoral candidate in the History and Philosophy of Sciences at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon and a member of the Medea-Chart project, supported by the European Research Council. She holds a BA in the Liberal Arts from Sarah Lawrence College (USA) and completed her MA in Archaeological Materials Science at the University of Évora. Her current research focuses on the artistic techniques and workshop practices employed in the creation of manuscript nautical charts in the Late Medieval and Early Modern periods. Her publications include “Anchoring the Image of the Sea: Copying Coastlines on Manuscript Nautical Charts from the Late Middle Ages and Early Modern Period” (Imago Mundi, 2022) and “Two Sixteenth-Century Nautical Charts of the South Atlantic Ocean: An Early Example of Cartography Used at Sea” (Journal of Navigation, 2023).
