Hardcover. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: dj. First edition. An association copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "For Mrs. Sayers, with high regard, from Hilldegarde Swift." A midcentury Burroughs biography, uncommon signed. The recipient is children's book author, librarian, and pioneering children's literature scholar Frances Clark Sayers, who American Libraries listed as one of "100 Most Important Leaders We Had in the 20th Century" and according to a colleague quoted in her LA Times obit "changed the consciousness of several generations of people involved in children's literature." She led the Department of Work with Children from the New York Public Library and finished her career lecturing on children's literature at UCLA, where her papers are held. See also her LA Times obit. Hildegarde Swift was also a children's book author, won the Newbery Medal for Little Blacknose, and taught children's lit at the New School; she was born to an English professor in upstate New York, which may explain her keen interest in Burroughs. Both Swift and Sayers ended up in California. With foreword by Burrough's granddaughter Elizabeth Burroughs and illustrations by renown illustrator Lynd Ward. Lemon-yellow boards, with black lettering. Very good with a little softening to lower corners in a very good jacket with wear and loss to corners and spine ends.
