The Cosmic Computer by H. Beam Piper is a science fiction novel set on the planet Poictesme, a world left in economic ruin after serving as a strategic base during the System States War. The protagonist, Conn Maxwell, returns home from Terra after studying cybernetics, with the expectation of finding the legendary supercomputer, Merlin, which is believed to solve all of the planet's problems. However, Conn discovers that Merlin is nothing more than a myth, a morale-boosting rumor from the war. Despite this revelation, Conn decides to perpetuate the myth to inspire hope and action among the people of Poictesme. He plans to organize a company to search for war-surplus equipment and potentially build a hypership to explore other planets in the system. Conn's father, Rodney Maxwell, supports the plan, recognizing the need to revitalize the planet's economy and spirit. The novel explores themes of belief, deception, and the power of hope in the face of adversity. As Conn navigates the complexities of change and the expectations of his community, he must balance the truth with the necessity of inspiring action, all while dealing with the personal and ethical implications of his deception.

Über die Autorin bzw. den Autor
Piper was largely self-educated; he obtained his knowledge of science and history without subjecting myself to the ridiculous misery of four years in the uncomfortable confines of a raccoon coat. He went to work at age 18 as a laborer at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Altoona yards in Altoona, Pennsylvania. He also worked as a night watchman for the railroad.
