The Old Soldier's Story: A Collection of Poems and Prose Sketches by James Whitcomb Riley - Softcover
Inhaltsangabe
"The Old Soldier's Story: Poems and Prose Sketches" by James Whitcomb Riley is a rich anthology that captures the essence of American life and culture through a blend of poetry and prose. The collection opens with "The Old Soldier's Story," a humorous narrative that reflects on the nature of storytelling and the human tendency to embellish tales. This piece sets the tone for the rest of the anthology, which is characterized by its vivid imagery, emotional depth, and exploration of themes such as love, loss, and nostalgia. Riley's work often delves into the simplicity and beauty of everyday life, as seen in poems like "SOMEP'N COMMON-LIKE" and "SUN AND RAIN," which celebrate the ordinary moments that define human experience. The anthology also includes poignant reflections on mortality and the passage of time, as exemplified in "GOOD-BY, OLD YEAR" and "AFTER THE FROST." Riley's use of dialect and colloquial language adds authenticity and charm to his work, making it accessible and relatable to a wide audience. The collection is a testament to Riley's skill as a storyteller and his ability to capture the complexities of human emotion with grace and humor.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Since we have had no stories to-night I will venture, Mr. President, to tell astory that I have heretofore heard at nearly all the banquets I have everattended. It is a story simply, and you must bear with it kindly. It is a story astold by a friend of us all, who is found in all parts of all countries, who isimmoderately fond of a funny story, and who, unfortunately, attempts to tell afunny story himself¿one that he has been particularly delighted with. Well, heis not a story-teller, and especially he is not a funny story-teller. His funnystories, indeed, are oftentimes touchingly pathetic. But to such a story as hetells, being a good-natured man and kindly disposed, we have to listenbecause we do not want to wound his feelings by telling him that we haveheard that story a great number of times, and that we have heard it ably toldby a great number of people from the time we were children. But, as I say, wecan not hurt his feelings. We can not stop him. We can not kill him; and so thestory generally proceeds. 102 pp. Englisch. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 9791041987092
