We had the mother-father pair, the mother-son apprentice pair, the father-daughter apprentice pair, and then me – their spare child. I enjoyed reading mom’s magic books, but my attempts usually went wrong. I understood everything my father did, but couldn’t duplicate any of it, other than pumping the bellows. Tasking me with their menial work freed up father and sister to focus on the better parts of smithing. Mother had no similar, mindless task for me. So, I spent most of my ‘apprentice’ time at the bellows. Lift-Carry-and-Blame I called myself. Anything the family needed lifted or carried was a task for me, and most times when something went wrong, it was my fault.
