In 1557, Lutheran theologian Andreas Musculus placed the Ottoman ruler and the Roman papacy side by side as the “Constantinopolitan” and Roman Antichrists. Across twenty-seven articles, he compares their claims concerning authority, Scripture, worship, marriage, repentance, pilgrimage, language, the Church, the sacraments, Christ’s satisfaction, and the last judgment.

Musculus’s construction is more than a catalogue of accusations. Each comparison is answered from the person, Word, and kingdom of Christ. The result is at once a work of Reformation polemic, a confession of Christ’s unique authority and saving work, and a vivid witness to the Ottoman danger and eschatological expectation of the sixteenth century.

This first English edition presents the complete text with the translated title page and dedication, an extensive editorial introduction, chronology, reader’s guide, article-by-article map, historical and textual annotations, biographical register, glossary, source list, and bibliography. An afterword by James D. Heiser places Musculus’s urgent expectation of Christ’s return in conversation with Johann Gerhard’s more restrained exposition of Revelation.
